5 Tips for Bathroom Organization

Bathrooms store an abundance of our necessities—soaps, lotions, make-up, toothpaste, hair gel, towels, medicine—just to name a few! It’s no wonder this room is a struggle to keep organized, but having a clean and orderly bathroom feels so luxurious. It’s well worth the effort to get this room spruced up. Here are my tips…

Towels & Washcloths

It doesn’t really matter how you choose to fold towels and washcloths—just be consistent. Having a stack of towels all the same size and shape makes for a crisp and organized look. I encourage you to purge any towels with tears and holes (donate them to your local animal shelter) and purchase a few fresh towels if needed—you won’t regret it!

I keep our washcloths in a drawer next to the sink. My kids are trained to use washcloths instead of the hand towels when brushing their teeth—which saves me from getting blue goo on my hands after washing. The washcloths also work great for wiping down the mirrors and counters in between deep cleans.

Find space to put a laundry basket (even if you only have the space for something small) in the bathroom to keep those towels and washcloths from piling up on the floor.

Toothbrushes & Toothpaste

I like to keep toothbrushes and toothpaste off the countertops—I appreciate a clear countertop, but I also like to keep my toothbrush tucked away from bathroom germs. I store toothbrushes and toothpaste in a drawer with a plastic liner that is easily removed to be sanitized as needed. You could also use a drawer divider tray or put a toothbrush holder inside a cabinet to keep the counters clear and toothbrushes clean.

Medicine & First Aid

Clear out any expired medication—check with your pharmacy for the best way to dispose of these products in your area. I just purchased clear stackable bins for our medicine and first aid items. I previously had them stored in wicker baskets, which looked pretty, but bottles didn’t stand up on the wicker and I couldn’t easily see what I had on hand. The clear plastic bins solve those problems and make it easy to quickly grab what I need—a real godsend when a little one develops a middle-of-the-night fever!

Hair Products

Gather all of your hair stuff and purge the items you don’t use—how many brushes, combs, and ponytail holders do you actually need? Use binder rings or carabiner clips to keeping ponytail holders and headbands contained and easy to grab—it’s a handy way to keep some in your purse or car, too. For bobby pins and clips, I use a small zippered pouch but any small container could work. Storing all these items together in a bin makes it easy to find exactly what you need to get the style you want.

Make-up & Misc. Toiletries

Eliminating make-up, creams, and other toiletries that are old and go unused is step one. Once you have the items you plan to keep, map out how best to use your storage space. Drawer organizers keep these items easy to find and contain the residues that sometimes get left behind—just give your organizer a quick rinse to keep them clean. For deeper drawers, stackable bins can help maximize storage space.

I recommend storing extra toiletries in baskets or bins within a linen closet or cabinet. It’s convenient to have just one place to look for back-ups when a product runs out. It’s also nice to consider guests by keeping extra toiletries, like shampoo and toothpaste, easy to find.

Bathroom organization can be overwhelming—there are just so many things in such a small space. I recommend breaking this project down and tackling one category at a time. Have questions or need advice? Leave a comment or send me a private message!
