How to Decorate a Modern Minimalist Home

Modern minimalist homes are making a splash all over home decor catalogs, HGTV, and Instagram. Have you set out to create this look in your own home, but can’t seem to get that Pinterest-worthy look?

Decluttering is the first step towards embracing minimalism. If you’ve made it through the process of purging and organizing, you may find your revamped space looks a little bare.

Minimalism does not mean that your home should feel empty and uninviting. Use the tips below to create a warm and welcoming, modern minimalist home.

Color

The best way to achieve a fresh, minimalistic feel in your home is with a neutral color palette. Light, warm shades of gray and beige have a calming effect that can make your space feel open, yet cozy.

White walls are gaining in popularity but choose your white carefully. A little tint to the white will ensure your family room doesn’t end up looking like an operating room.

Other large items, such as upholstered furniture and window treatments, work best in neutral colors to help your space look crisp and clean.

Need a pop of color? Use items like throw pillows and artwork to add a bit of color and personality to your minimalistic home.

Texture

Since minimalist design features a muted color palette, textures are a great way to make a space feel warm and inviting without adding clutter. Rugs, throw pillows, blankets, and wicker baskets instantly make your home feel more cozy.

Patterns

Patterns are a great way to add visual interest to a room. Patterns can be incorporated in items like artwork, throw pillows, and rugs. When selecting patterns, choose prints that appeal to you and your personal style.

To keep things from looking too “busy” keep the colors muted and consistent. A monochromic space helps achieve a calm and airy feel.

Nature

Natural elements will make any space feel more inviting, so “naturally,” you should add some into your home.

Wood is a perfect complement to minimalist design. Its natural texture and color will add warmth to any space. Accent tables, photo frames, and decorative trays are all great ways to bring in natural wood tones.

Plants are essential to minimalist decor.  Real or faux, plants give a pop of color and are perfect for softening the look of a minimally-styled room. Add a succulent to your side table. Place an olive tree in a belly basket and set it in the corner of the room. Tuck a philodendron on the bookcase and let its vines cascade down the shelves. Plants give a fresh, airy look to any space.

Decor

The key to keeping your space minimalistic and tidy is to decorate with items that provide a purpose. Books, trays, baskets, photos, mirrors, candles, vases, decorative bowls, accent pillows, and throws all serve as functional home decor.

Choose decorative pieces that have meaning to you—perch a collection of your favorite books on a shelf, have a cherished photo printed to create a piece of art, use a vintage bowl or tray to catch keys and sunglasses in the entryway. All of these items will make your space feel homey. Because they are a reflection of YOU, they are guaranteed to make you feel comfortable and happy in your minimalist space.
